Why so few photos posted?

This is a photo site. Why all the long dialogue, even description of photos, and such a lack of inline photos posted?

Where there are inline photos, they seem predominately by beginners. Or - they are just links.

The Photo Sharing section is an exception of sorts - with what seems a lack of similar postings by others.

Just curious. Thoughts? Should we post more? Are they appreciated?

Surely, if you surf at work it helps if the boss comes behind you, otherwise, I'd want to see photos galore!

Good points...it may be the critique factor. I posted--"shared" -- an image of my little girl in a pirate costume just because. The following posts all focussed on whether the smile was a smile or a sneer and whether it contributed to the image. It made me laugh, for, as truly vauable as the commentary was, I was simply sharing a half-way decent photo of my daughter...not a submission to Maritime Quarterly.

The Photo Sharing section performs this very adequately.

What more do you need?

What about "a single picture is worth a thousand words"?

Question is; do you find it annoying to have embedded photos as appropriate and do you really like the text heavy format, or would you like to see more point-illustrating shots?

I just get the feeling sometimes that this is more chat-room (which I find tiresome at times) and less photo-forum (which conversely I find more lively).

Is it an effort thing? (lots of members here have several thousand posts) or is it by design?

I would say that its not a gallery site.. It's pretty much for those who wish to share a couple of photos with others to comment on. It's a place of learning for others in the know to help others achieve the photo results they are striving for.. If you want to share more than that you setup your own gallery for people to go to.


ps: I surf all day at work and I love seeing all the pictures.. except the nudies of course.. lol..

I have to agree with Bob here.

I spend way too much time here and still don't have time to see everything posted in the sharing and critique sections.

Keep in mind that embedded images really slow down the page loads for those without a high-speed connection.

There's a separate section for sharing photos, and a separate section for critiques and comments.

I think the photo sharing section is excellent for just that, although I see no problem with critiques there, especially when they're requested.

I don't know if there are enough hours in the day to look through all the pictures in the photo sharing section...

This is not a photo site. It is a photography site with an area where people who wish to post photos may do so.

Ok, just my 2 cents here. I understand completely what you're saying. Then there's the other side of the coin. Most questions are met with the reply of "post a picture with EXIF and we can help you". Fine, excellent, wunderbar....but when you see enough of those when you're doing your proper searching of the forum you tend to post a picture FIRST so you won't look like a n00b.

It's a vicious cycle....

This ain't pbase jack. This is a forum, it's not flickr, not shutterbug, and not ofoto.

.. by your logic, why are all the members on the car enthusiast forum writing about driving cars instead of being out on the streets driving them?

Still; when some thread discusses some photo technique where actual examples embedded inline would illustrate matters so well, yet I see 20 or 30 posts without said photos, I just wondered about it. Not as a means of showing off how pretty their kid is, but to illustrate some point.

Here's an example; (to illustrate:p - and hopefully not annoy).

On another site there were several pages regarding white balance. The thread's poster was a novice and didn't get it. So I posted the following 2 side by side.

Photo #1, Custom WB set too low. Blue tint.
Photo #2, corrected.

Why don't you step up to the plate and start posting more photos yourself as I am sure you could be very helpful here on the forum?

And please feel free to share youre post-processing instructions. I am sure there are many people here who would appreciate what you can teach them.

I don't personally see a problem. The photo sharing sections are there, and used very frequently. Almost too much to a point, where if you don't post something "special", it'll be off the page in just a few hours.

I'm a beginner, only been shooting SLR since February.
Don't share mine in critique, as my photography is for myself, and my sharing, is just to show what a beautiful country New Zealand is.

I'm now waiting for own image, in relation to this own thread. Should be interesting what you come up with.

Im mean no disrespect but does anyone understand his post? Or are we too quick to type away in the quick reply box and hit 'post quick reply'. So many posts here go pear shaped because people don't slow down and read the original post, if you don't understand, ask for clarification. Some of the reponses here are almost rude, rather than helpful and informative.

The way I see it (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the original poster is not contemplating the lack of 'photo sharing', he is referring to the lack of images used as examples. As unique beings we all respond to different forms of explaination. For a visual learner a picture from each stage during a process, or a simple screenshot will help much more than text.
