Shoudl i pick up a Gary Phone Lightsphear? if so which one?

diffusers outdoors are generally a waste of battery
one of their main uses is to scatter the light and bounce it, hopefully back to the subject... bouncing rarely happens outdoors....

fill flash works... FEC (or negative FEC) is what you'll want to use

If you find they are squinting.. tell them to close their eyes and open it on your count then quickly take the shot.

But try and find some shade if possible.

Is the whole wedding outdoors in the sun? Or is this for the location shoot?

weddings are a lot of fun to shoot !! The bright sunlight can really ruin photos if you're not careful !! Shade, shade shade !! and closer to the end of day is best I find when it comes to taking decent outdoor formals that way the sun is lower and less of a pain in the butt !

Hell, I'm excited to see how this goes! I want to move into weddings at some point ( I live on tense situations), and I love it when others take the plunge.

Far as the lighting, I think you should work with the sun, and see what kind of results you get. You'll have your wife there as 2nd, so one of you could adjust for sunlight, and the other could sort of experiment with finding interesting shots with the harsh light. I just watched the Cliff Mautner tutorial on it, and it sounds like an interesting avenue...

When at all possible, have their backs to the sun. Use it as backlight, and bring up the front with some fill. Gel as needed so the flash isn't so obvious.

If you have portable studio strobes, get a 60" umbrella - that will really help things out.

ND filters or HSS. There was a long thread on ND filters here somewhere.

If you're not using flash, an ND filter shouldn't be necessary. Just drop the ISO and raise your shutter speed.

You can't do much during the ceremony. Just find angles with the sun behind the subject. If their faces are towards the sun, you can shoot and try to correct in post (fill light in ACR/LR).

For formals, find some shade, bring a scrim, or use flash to tame the ambient.

Hope it all goes well for the couple's sake. As long as they like the photos, you're golden!
