Poking in the leaf litter in my UK garden today I came across this creature, unlike anything I've seen before, so I don't know where to start looking to try to identify it. I'm sure some of the more experienced shooters here will at least be able to give me a steer. It was about 7mm long and moved flexibly like a worm, had no legs, and either no or very small eyes. Its back looks hard and each of the "plates" had spiky extremities. It could bend its head around. Any help much appreciated.

Looks slightly like the larva of a soldierfly - many of these do live in leaf litter.
