I was speaking with a person today who use to shoot Nikon and now shoots with Canon. Although he prefers Canon to Nikon, he made a comment I have not heard before or experienced in my work (I am forced to shoot Nikon on my job) but prefer and have Canon gear for my freelance and personal work). He said with Canon he has to do more post processing than with Nikon to get what he is after. Just curious if others have heard this and/or any comments.

Its been reported that nikons crank up the sharpening and saturation in the standard settings. All you have to do is change picture style settings to do the same in a canon.

It's the way Nikon and Canon engineers decided to process the images in the camera. Canon tends to have a more "let the photographer" decide attitude.

It is probably due to Canon's "source oriented policy", for example:

I'm happy with Canon - have been for years. I think a lot of people who either want to upgrade of change makes need to work on improving their technique.

I've heard the opposite thing so far, 'Nikon had better color and blah blah...'

I often hear the opposite thing, that Canon RAW files require much less work than dealing with Nikon photos. To each their own.

Do I understand this to mean that Nikon shooters need more help? ;)

It may depend on the colors you are after. I have heard it said that Canon does better OOC for skintones. But Nikon loves landscape type of work. Much like Velvia colors are different than Kodachrome.

i will agree with the colors of nikon vs canon, but using custom style sets you can mimic numerous films and even the nikon color scheme.

i am always amazed at the lack of people using canon custom style sets. there are so many out there and if you search flickr for Kevin Wang you will see the master of custom styles.

i use numerous style sets that require no color/contrast/tone adjustments because they are near perfect out of the camera when shooting jpeg or using the canon software to process raw images.
its truly a shame that photoshop doesn't recognize custom styles in raw files.

about nikon vs canon sharpening.

i am not sure who or why someone said nikon is sharper when the fact is they are not and its been proven time and time again.

nikon is naturally soft, its why when you read reviews you must take into account that nikon images, jpeg or raw or 100% going to be softer because canon applies more sharpening.
read any legitimate review from anyone who knows what they are taling about and they will always remind readers that nikons default output is softer than nikon.

as for post processing times... that depends on what your doing but with my experience with nikon vs canon i will 10000% agree that there is less color/contrast/brightness adjustments needed on nikon than canon.

but again, this 100% comes down to what are you trying to do to the image.
what is your goal.
