I had a 1D mark 2N for about a year and loved it to bits. Despite what people said about awkward handling I found it OK to use.
Then I had the hots for a 7D. Newer technology, greater pixel density and a host of features.
I use the 7D for BIF, tripod+gimbal for smaller birds and wildlife macro.

I have all EF lenses.

I've seen all the reviews that put the 7D ahead of the 1D Mark 3 on virtually all counts.

But...............there is still something nagging at me about the 1D series. The physical feel of the body is so different, the 7D with a grip doesn't come anywhere near the 1D.

Whatever people say about the AF of the 7D being almost as good as the 1D if not equal, I can say, IMHO, it's not as good.

So, am I completely off my head in wanting to swap my 7D for a 1D Mk3?

You have the means ... swap cameras.
go shoot and enjoy life with a 1DmkIII.

end of story-see you-bye bye.

ps ... but you can share images you capture with said new camera. :D

Most of the posts that I've seen of owners of both cameras put the MKIII ahead of the 7D for action shots. When I shoot my son's high school football, a 7D shooter is usually there shooting as well and I always have a much higher rate of keepers. It could be her camera settings & technique that is lacking, but so far, there hasn't been any comparison.

I do not own a 7d/1D2/1D3, however I asked the same question of another photographer a little while back. He said that he loved his 7D and that it was one of the finest cameras he had ever tried. I was a little suprised that, when an Otter cruised past, it was a 1D3 in his hand and the 7D was in his backpack! He simply said that it's a better camera and he prefers the pictures that the 1D3 gives. I do not have enough experience/use of these two cameras to judge the merits of one over the other but he had both bodies with him and chose the older (Pro) technology over pixels - food for thought?

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I think if possible why not get a 1d3 and try it out and then decide which one to keep?

So many posts from people saying they already reach for A camera and so many posts of people saying they'd reach for B camera. In the end is which one you want to use that's important.

Geez, you'd hope a $7,000 camera (1D mkIII ) would perform better than a $1,600 camera (7D).

A 1d mark III isn't $7,000. You are thinking about a 1Ds Mark III.

Just a mere $4,000 when new to the $1700 of 7D when new. But who's counting? ;)

Can't speak for the OP. But I can only imagine falling in love with the design/ergo/feel of a particular equipment and suddenly not liking going down to "inferior" gear.

But as someone noted... if the money's there, buy whatever makes you happy.

i think either one will take equally fine action shots given the same settings.

my friend chris has a 7d and had the opportunity to get a 1d3 and ended up not getting the 1d3. that doesnt make either camera better, its just an account of the 7d winning in this person's comparison.

personally I would take either.
with the 10mp how big could you print from the 1d3?

The 1D is more of a pro camera, so you're not out of your mind at all. Rent one and see what you think; for BIF I'd prefer the 1D no question.

I have a 1D4 and a 7D and I really like both cameras. Both do great for sports with the right settings.

People will argue, but the larger the sensor, the better the imaging. That's a fact.

Thank you. bw!

The 1d2 is annoying but it sure makes pretty pictures.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

I agree with you the 1d body feels so much nicer than a 7d, I've seen a lot of people complaining about the size of 1d but coming from Asia and traveling mostly in Asia, I've yet run into people who are... "uncomfortable?" "put off?" by my camera size? In my opinion I think they can't really differentiate them because dslr as a whole is still a rare sight (Except for the young hipster wearing their fancy beginner dslr around their neck and walk in the mall like its an fashion accessory).
