Not to be a killjoy, and maybe I'm off base, but I don't see the point of having the 17-50 and the 24-105. I know the Tamron is a stop faster blah blah blah, but it's overlap to the n'th degree. I tried out a Tamron in a shop and although the optics were great, I was unimpressed with the build and the AF noise killed it for me.

Pair the flash with the 24-105, and see how it goes, especially since you already have a fast lens with your 50. Then...if...you need wider, or faster, add an UWA, or other lens (maybe a fast prime like a Sigma 30), or look at other options based on your needs.

I am purely thinking on basis of price. If I can get new one for 300, it is a no brainer. I can always upsell it or recoup my investment in any case. Any good suggestions for UWA in ~400 range.

It all depends on light. I shoot Kids all the time, sometimes with fast primes, sometimes stopped down. Sometimes with or without flash. It really is about being ready so owning a flash is a must as far as I am concern.

Okay so the consensus is flash then. Rather than get 50mm f/1.4, I am going to get Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I can get the educational rebate so price will be less than 50mm f/1.4. Will keep my 24-105L and 50mm f/1.8. Gotta get rid of 18-135 then.

I am now kind of kicking myself for not getting 430EXII last year when after price match it was available for ~200 at Staples. Prices have gone up like crazy for photography items with Yen appreciating against the Dollar over last year. My next purchase will be from 10 to 24 range UWA lens.

Not seeing why you'd get the Tammy... Get a younongo ettl flash for ~$100. And get the 50 1.4. If you really want a 2.8 lens, I'll sell you my sigma cheap since I don't use it now that I have the 24-105 and a flash.

Both lenses are about equal indoors in terms of low-light abilities. The IS on the 15-85 is a bit better, but the 24-105 has a wider aperture for most of the comparable focal lengths. However, the 15-24mm range on the 15-85 is going to be far more useful indoors than the 86-105 on the 24-105 will be.

That being said. Get a FLASH that can be pointed back and upwards before doing anything else. Fast lenses just replace the issue of too high of ISO with too narrow Depth of Field, at least for fast-moving kids.

For less than $1000 you can get a Refurbished 15-85 IS, the Canon lens hood for it, and a new 430 EX II. I use this combo with my 2-year-old and they work great.

Thanks for around $1000 I could get 15-85 New with 430EX II or keep 24-105L Canon Refurbished with 430EX II. These are my options now with 60D. I am not looking to go FF soon, so still debating if I want to keep 24-105L. I don't need the 15-24 range indoors for now, but I can always add UWA next year to pair with my 24-105L. Decisions... Decisions....

To start use ETTL and get a diffuser and use some FEC to adjust it to your liking. You will never regret owning at least 1 flash.

If you need shutter speed + depth of field, only way is to get a flash. Something like Yongnuo yn 468 flash would work well. It's about $90 on amazon.

Set the camera to manual, set to F/5.6-8, shutter speed of 1/200, ISO400-800-1600 depending on available interior light. Aim flash up to a white ceiling surface and fire away. Experiment a bit to get the best bounch flash angle.

If you can live with small depth of field, get a 24-70 or 17-50 f/2.8 lens depending reach you need. At f/2.8, you will need ISO800-1600 to indoor shots with all the light on.

Still learning
