Ok bear with me not only am I a newbie I'm an extremely sleep deprived mother. I have a 7 month old that is waking 3-4 times a night and a day job so bear with me for sounding totally stupid here.

I'm looking for a remote that will trigger my camera to take a picture. On B&H I cannot for the life of me figure out which I need.

Which camera? The 300D/350D use one type of connector (a mini stereo headphone jack, referred to by Canon as a "T3") and the others all use a different one (N3 connector). Then there's whether you want to be able to fire it from a distance, via infrared (only the 300D/350D do this, I think) or whether a couple of feet of cable is enough.

How far away will the camera be when you take the shot?

Canon's RS-80N3 (external link) is the cheapest Canon solution (about $50 at B&H). ISTR there are some third-party (and much less expensive) ones to be found on eBay. They've been mentioned around here, but I honestly can't recall the details, not doing eBay myself.

So you're looking at triggering the camera from several feet away? There are more expensive, third party, radio-based solutions available. IIRC, PocketWizards can do this, but I have no experience with them. The TC-80N3 doesn't offer wireless, or longer distance, remote. You could also splice a length of cable into the existing one to extend the reach.

The 20D has a built in 10 second timer. There's no IR remote facility built in - so the cheap Canon IR remotes don't work.

The 20D has an N3 socket. You can use Canon's RS-80N3 remote or a cheap clone thereof. You can also use Canon's TC-80N3; I have one of those in my bag, and once you've figured out how to use it for your photography, it allows all sorts of flexibility, as well as being able to be used as a 'dumb' remote just like the RS-80N3.

For example, I can set the TC-80N3 to wait 15 seconds, then fire 4 frames at 8 second intervals, which is great for the classic 'set the camera and run into shot' scenario. 8 seconds is ample time for my 580EX flash to recycle; usually it takes much less time than that.

There's another answer.... The RS-80N3 remote switch (or the cheap clones that David alluded to above) have three wires in the cable between the switch and the plug.

You can cut the cable in the middle and solder a miniature stereo headset plug (male) to one of the cut ends of the cable and a jack (female) to the other cut end of the cable.

To use the switch with its original length of cable, just insert the plug into the jack.

To use the switch further from the camera, use a common stereo headset extension cable - or build your own 3-wire cable of almost any length and use the same type of plug and socket set that you used for the switch's cable.
