Hello.
Well it's finally happened. The focus motor on my 1.0 has finally given up.
Just wondering if anyone knows someone who can fix this for me?? Or do I now have to let my lens go and start looking for a replacement??
I have owned this for about a year and despite its faults I have grown quite fond of it.

Any ideas

Cheers

Jeff

Do Canon still have spare USM motors for it?

Yeah tell me about it

I have contacted Canon on the off chance that they will do it for me but officially they no longer service this lens.

It's a pity as you need the motor to focus manually as well.

It must be said, while not as long lasting as some lenses, that's a reasonable innings.

Contact someplace like KEH.com - they service lenses that are no longer serviced by Canon. If they can't do it, maybe they can point you to someone else that can.

worse case, ebay it "as-is" or "repair". you'll still probably get a pretty penny for it. I'm amazed at what some people will pay for broken L lenses, sometimes close of what it would cost used and in working order.

use the funds to buy you a 50 f/1.2L :-)

Don't sell it, it might be a spectacular collection in many years.

Maybe it can't be repaired, but is,there anyway that the motor can be 'disabled' so that it can be used manually

As I understand it, there is not true "manual" focusing with this lens, or the 85L's either. Turning the manual focus ring engages the focus motor. So the focusing has to be performed by the motor in either case.

Isn't the 50L f/1.0 built a lot like the 85L's? Any chance they share a similar enough focus motor that somebody like KEH could make it work?
