Nope, There is no many groups, just single one.
EF 300 2.8L USM is focus-by-wire, while IS version is not.

Making USM to manual focusable, all it needs is a clutch between USM ring and manual focusing ring.

I have contacted Canon about a possible fix but am still awaiting a response. Hopefully (fingers crossed) they can get it done for me. If not I'm gonna track down a few of the other places mentioned by the helpful folk in this thread to see if someone can get this beast up and running again.

Probably you should contact Rainer Hönle (external link) in Germany. He is a very knowledgable Canon technican for AF lenses and DSLR cameras.
