what do you mean set pins?

See that recessed piece on the base of this piece diagonally from the center head mount screw? Thats a set pin right? Meant to dig into the bottom of your head to make sure it doesnt come unscrewed.

ahh yeah if you use a Markins its not recommended to use set screws..so don't use that thing

I just turned my Q20 by hand as hard as I think I could without doing any damage to it. and so far it has held up

Yea I never do. I never used it on my GT1541T/Markins Q3T combo and in the three years I have owned it, it has never once come undone.

Ah! Think I just found the answer! I found this Comment in the review section at B&H for the current model leveling base:

Comments about Gitzo GS5121LV Leveling Base:

Thoughtfully-designed 75 mm half-ball leveling tripod platform that will fit any 75 mm bowl but comes with its own (removable) bowl to adapt to the Gitzo Series 3 70 mm diameter and Series 5 80 mm diameter platform rings. Purchased to better extend use to still photography of a tripod that came with a 75 mm half ball video head.

But its a little confusing. So does it come with the 75mm bowl or not?! lol

I think it came with the 75mm bowl..so if you use it on a series 3...it would like Jeevs, and prodrude a bit...if you use it on a Series 5..it will be completely flushed since it has a bigger base or you need an adapter of some sort

here's Peter Lik's 5 series with the leveling base... as you can see it doesn't have that protruding part the same as Jeevs

That would make sense as 75mm would be in between the 70mm of the 3 series and 80mm of the 5 series. Good thinking monk3y.

We'll see what model number jeev comes back with for the bowl adapter thats on his leveling kit. As of right now though, its looking like Im going to go with the leveling base instead of just the bowl adapter. For another hundred more, why not?! Well, That and I have $300 in amazon credit just burning a hole in my pocket! ;)

Wow... 5 Series AND Hasselblad. Must be nice...

Hmmm... now theres something to think about down the road, the Markins Q20 vs an RRS head, maybe the 55?

Q20 all the way  seriously I think you just have to choose between their form factor...according to Julian though the Q20 is better than the BH-55. he used to have the BH-55 himself

Yea I dont think I coud really go any other way than the Markins. Besides, itll look super cool next to my GT1541T/Q3T setup both with RRS lever clamps! Itll be like Dr. Evil and Mini-Me! A mini clone!

As a 'club member', I'm compelled to ask. Where did you hear (or read) that monk3y ? ... inquiring minds want to know. :)

And yes, I did use my set screw when I mounted the Q20. I turned it until it 'just touched', then gave it a squidge more pressure. I hope I didn't hurt anything.

I read it at Nikonians that it might cause the base of the ballhead to warp  and I am sure I have read it somewhere else too:lol:

I just read the Markins Europe PDF
http://www.markinseurope.com …sersguide-2010-en_5.1.pdf (external link)

I guess its just a warning

If your tripod has such locking screws, you may use them, but be careful not to screw
them in too tight. If you do, you may damage the panorama base of the ball head or at least make
it difficult or even impossible to pan.
