Everyone knows about the rise and fall of Detroit. Some say the city is in "ruins"; abandoned buildings left behind as memorials. They're tombstones. I prefer to be more hopeful in my approach. There is a sliver of hope in these images, at least I like to believe so. Detroit has a lot of potential. It lives.

The full set can be found here (external link), but it is constantly evolving.

I very much like the images, especially the last one. The light streaming on to the pillars on the left really adds to the image. Do you have any from the same vantage point with the sun at a steeper angle?

In a more thematic sense, I wish I could share your hopefulness but, to me, the images seem more to portray abandonment, sadness and despair. When even the churches are empty, it would seem that hope is gone.

Great series! I found myself getting getting lost in the full set looking at all subtle details. Awesome work. There is something about the fisheye shot from the roof of the Packard plant, with the cemetery across the railroad tracks and the Detroit sky line in the background that really makes a major impact.

Great set, some more great stuff on your Flickr too. Would love to see more of these poor abandoned buildings. Such a shame they've fallen into ruin.

That last one is AMAZING. If I were you, I'd get that printed. Would you get that printed? I'd pay money to get that printed. I've got an 11x17 frame collecting dust right now, actually...

Really though, the light/feel of the place is absolutely amazing, but I adore that chair. It's the smallest little detail, but it really does a lot for me.

Thanks all. The first and last shots are actually at my public first exhibition. If you think they look good on your screen, wait till you see it 45x30 inches on stretched canvas! Dang!

As for abandoned buildings, that is one of my two specialties the other one being rooftopping. I've gone to several countries from Canada to Cambodia to Australia to do this stuff. It's an addiction.

Beautiful set. As a preservationist I also like to be hopeful. The good news is the infrastructure is all there if the city starts to grow again. Let's hope things aren't too far gone when this happens, as to discourage tear-downs. Flickr set is great too!

Amazing! I've been reading a lot lately about the revitalization of Detroit and it is music to my ears. We often hear way too much about the negative side of that city. We forget that there's a huge number of educated people choosing to stay/relocate to Detroit. I hope it can begin to rebuild. It won't be easy.

Awesome photos. I literally said, "wow" out loud! You should check out the old dilapidated buildings thread - I'm sure you'd see lots of inspiring stuff!
