I'm looking for a new prime lens around the 24mm-35mm (as an fyi I'm working with a 1.6 crop) area. I'm looking for IQ (most important), price, decently fast aperture (2.8 and faster), and build quality. Any suggestions?

Since you're shooting crop, get the Sigma!

yep on crop Sigma 30 1.4 on FF Canon 35 1.4L :)
don't bother with Samyang, time that they make lenses with autofocus ability.

Anyone noticed an IQ difference between 30mm 1.4 and 28mm 1.8? I'm leaning towards the Sigma but worried about Sigma QC.

There's not much of a difference, although I would give the Sigma a slight edge. Personally, I got the 28 for its FF compatibility, but i was surprised at how good its AF is, especially in low light.

A few of links I found useful:

And a recent "discovery" :)

Sigma 30 has better IQ than the 28 1.8, as well as better build quality, and cheaper price. IMO its the one to get.

Man, if you can deal with manual focus, the Samyang is supposed to be a beast.

Sigma has smoother bokeh, though.

Manual focus with a fast prime only works in ultra controlled environments... or for filming.

Thanks for the advice guys; I'm always pleased with the feedback I get from this forum. I'm still kind of stuck but leaning towards the Sigma 30mm 1.4

I am in the same position. I ll go with canon 28/1,8 for FF compatibility and USM (whatever that means but especially for that).

But i am thinking also 35L.

Not canon 35/2 due to lack of USM.
Not samyang 35/1,4 due to lack of AF (but my next lens will be the MF 14/2,8)
Not sigma 30/1,4 due to reported problems in low light AF (and less for QC)

I think, IQ is equal to all the above (with a small exception of samyang).

So far, my local store has not canon 28/1,8 or (lucky me) nor 35L... so i collect the money and whatever comes first, i ll get it....

Canon 40D / EF-S 18-55 is f3,5-5,6 / EF 70-300 is f4-5,6 sold / EF 28 f1,8 / EF 35L f1,4 / EF 85 f1,8 sold / EF 70-200L f4 is

I don't understand why USM is big deal for 30mm range.
If I'm chasing birds, jets and kids with 70-200 zoom, I know why I need USM, but on relatively wide prime...

Because when you do low light photography, sometimes the lens will hunt once or twice before locking focus... USM (or sigma's HSM) really speeds that process up. It's also quieter so it's less intrusive when taking candid portraits of friends and family.

For me it's because of shooting candids and how quickly the moment passes. The last thing i want to worry about is if my AF will be quick enough and accurate enough for the task when trying to compose on fly is already tough enough.

No love on the Samyang? I liked the sample shots I saw of it…and I own the Sigma. If you need AF, Sigma is my pick.
