My first real portrait shoot.

There is a photo competition that I want to enter and this month category is portrait. I have no real experience in taking portraits so I would really appreciate any advice that you can come with. You can see my gear in my signature and the forecast says it's going to rain on the day of the shoot (Saturday) and I don't have a studio so I was planning on doing it outside.


Can non, can Canon. EOS 7D| G12 |Canon EF-S 15-85 mm IS US|Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6|Speedlite 430EX II.

The 15-85mm IS is great for portraits. I usually shoot between 65-85mm at around f/8-f/11 to get head or head and shoulders and good depth of field on the face. Try using your 430ExII wirelessly controlled by your 7D (I do that all the time with my 60D) to get more interesting lighting. You can use it to produce some highlights on the face when balanced with the ambient.
