Wrong section as this is for sharing photos of people. Have a look through the people discussion subforum and the sticky threads there to help out. You're question is extremely broad with no single right answer.

what kind of portraits? portraiture is extremely subjective, so you have to have an "ideal" clearly in mind. there are lots of resources out there for "classical" techniques regarding lighting, perspective, posing, attire, etc. school portraits are technically "good" portraits, but i cringe every time i see one because they are sooo boring. so Chris is right to say that we need more information to help point you in the right direction.
