I feel like this is quite the minuscule review. Still, I am hoping this helps someone that is in the same shoes as me and keeps losing their eye cup on their Canon 5D MKII. I wear glasses so the eye cup comes in handy, but I don’t want to keep spending $12 on a genuine Canon eye cup every time one goes missing. This time instead of buying an eye cup made by Canon I purchased an imitation eye cup from Hong Kong on eBay. I paid $2.10 shipped from trust_digital2009. The item was received within two weeks and the wait was worth paying only 1/6th of a genuine Canon eye cup.

Once I tried to put the knock-off eye cup on the camera I noticed that the fitment was EXTREMELY tight. At first I was worried and thought it wouldn’t even fit. I think the only way to get it off now is for it to break. This may seem like a negative thing but to me it works out nicely. I don’t want it to ever come off.

Overall, the quality of the eye cup is great for a piece of rubber and plastic. If this eye cup does ever break or goes missing I will be sporting another imitation eye cup from eBay.

Photos in the link below. Hope it saves a few people some money. :)

The standard eyecup quickly scratched/rubbed off the coating on my glasses. I have since bought a Hoodman eyecup and it seems to be much better. It's hard to tell definitively since I haven't replaced the messed up lens, yet. The one thing I have noticed is that I do not need to clean my glasses more than once a shoot with the Hoodman whereas the standard eyecup I would be cleaning my glasses every 15 minutes due to smudging.

I picked up a secind 5DII recently and immediately ordered another Hoodman.

PS: I haven't had the issue of a loose eyecup so have never lost one on a Canon camera.

I just looked it up. http://hoodmanusa.com/prodinfo.asp?number=H-EYEC18L (external link)

Just to make sure, the hoodman eye cup does not have any extra glass on it right? It just the plastic mount and the rubber hood.

Thanks for the review, just got a 1D series without its eyecup (wonder what the previous owner did with it!)

Just ordered one from eBay, the wait begins!

LOL yeah it is a wait if it's coming from HK...I think I am going to give the Hoodman a try once I lose this imitation eye cup. Shoot this eye cup is on so tight I'll probably rub off the rubber before I will lose it.

BTW, thanks bohdan for the suggestions!

The Hoodman goes on very tight, also.

I put two small pieces of gaffer tape under the OEM eyepiece, and have never had a movement problem.
