Anyone find any alternate product other than the $$$ Canon version?

(I searched, but no useful results)

Nope. I actually ordered one off of eBay for $45 and it was TOO small..... Since it is not in stock anywhere, you can order a C version for the 28-300 L from Canon Parts.

Seems everyone is out of stock of the Canon $$$ one. Seems odd to me.

They are out of stock, because the item has never arrived. I'm very happy to report that the ring for the 28-300 L ordered from Canon parts USA, will work!!!! The eBay Chinese ring for that lens, WILL NOT WORK. There is a different locking mechanism that the Official Canon one has that allows the ring to close and have "wiggle room" and lock down. The Chinese one, did not have this wiggle room and was too small. Here are a few pictures. The bottom picture shows the ring totally closed, but there is still a gap. This doesn't impact anything, other than how it looks. It is totally secure.

Here is the Chinese ring for the 28-300 (and advertised for the 70-300L too). You can see that it has a pin screw into the ring to close the ring. This is a different design than the official Canon ring and will not work on the 70-300. So, if the Chinese ring looks like the official Canon ring, it might work. But if it looks like this, it definitely will not work. Hope this helps.

Is there a web site for Canon Parts USA? Or just the phone? I searched and found cameras/lenses for sale, but not the accessory tripod ring C. $210 for A or B!!!

Thanks for the info.

Wow what a mess. Makes it even more maddening Canon was too cheap to include it for the pretty high price for this lens. Oh well.

(And the demand is so high that I see even the Chinese 70-300L one, which apparently doesn't even fit anyway, is going for $144 on ebay now! nuts!)
