If you had three lenses with variable focal lengths to cover many areas of shooting, what focal lengths ranges would they be or is that unreasonable?

Thanks

10-200 f/1.1
200-600 f/1.1
600-1200 f/1.1

That would pretty much do it for me

without your saying what you shoot (and what body you have), the answers are going to be random draws. E.g., for me, a macro lens is an essential and a birding lens would be a complete waste. For someone else, the reverse.

I don't see how that covers "as much as possible". It only reaches 200mm and has a hole between 55 and 70mm.

I have 10-22, 24-105L and 100-400L, which covers twice the range and has (almost) the entire range covered from 10-400mm. That combo does it for me, covering all the lengths I usually need, with a selection of fast primes doing the low light stuff when I need a fast aperture.

I guess I should have qualified my answer more. I dont find the 100-400L to be all that friendly for general use, so yes you can surely cover more range. What I had in mind was good quality lenses in the range the average user would need.

The range does not have to be absolutely perfect on paper; real world shooting should dictate your needs - many so called FL "holes" can be eliminated with less expensive shoe leather. We didn't always have quality zooms. ;)

I didn't think it really mattered what body I used since most SLRs can accommodate most interchangeable lenses. But, if it's important to know, the 60D is what I use.

Thanks

The question as to what body you have is as relevant as what you shoot...

If you need wide angle, or extreme telephoto, you can make different choices if you have a FF or Crop body... For some 17mm is wide enough on a FF, but the same lens on a crop acts like a 27mm lens, so you might need a 10mm or 11mm lens... and for the telephoto end, a 70-200mm might be enough if you have a crop, but you might need to go longer or get a teleconverter if you have FF...

The angle of view is different on a crop camera like the rebels, 60D, 7D etc, than on a full frame camera like the 5D. For instance a 17mm lens acts much more like a wide angle on a 5D, than on a 60D. Plus its important to know that EF-S lenses only mount on crop cameras.

I understand the terms and their uses in perhaps a photo imaging software, but in direct relations to the camera other than what I may think, I may be obviously wrong. View finder image?
