Looking stingy is terrible for business, imo. Even if you aren't actually being stingy.

Exactly. I don't think a photographer can be expected to cover it if it's a surprise expense of a significant amount. I don't think that's being stingy either, since we always price our services with certain expected costs included.

So like anything else...it depends.
