come to think about it, I think about 9" as well... I just checked Kenrockwell and yes it is 9" from the sensor.

my 55mm can only go to 1:2 though :D

Please help me understand the ratio of 1:2 for macro. I really have no clue.

Check the specs of the 50 MP. What do you think the ratio is for that lens?

you tell me that after they announce the D800  ;)

If they keep the same specs on the D800 like the D3s, it's really not worth my time.

1:2 is half life size. So the lens will be extended about 1/2 its focal length and will focus on something about 3x the f. l. from the front (nodal point) of the lens. (Ballpark numbers)

I dunno how to explain it but people usually want 1:1

A 1:1 macro lens projects an image, at life size, on your sensor. It really is that simple, there is no need to try and complicate it by worrying about sensor sizes, number of megapixels, viewing size on the monitor, or anything else that has been mentioned - none of that matters. If you held a sheet of A4 paper behind your lens, at the same distance your sensor would normally be, the lens would still project a life size image on the paper.

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1061340

and another one

1:1 ratio means that 1mm of the subject will cover 1mm on the cameras sensor, 1:2 gives 1mm on the sensor for 2mm of the subject. So a macro lens with a 1:1 will be capable of giving more detailed close ups, however as Tannin has stated you do need to get very close with these lenses.

I recently saw a lens with a 5:1 ratio, so 1mm of subject takes up 5mm of senser... stunning close ups, however it wasn't within my budget...

so my Macro can only magnify about half of lenses that can do 1:1... I think Kenji's 100L Macro can do 1:1 :D

Thanks for that bit of info. If it's like a D3x, then it's a maybe for now. :)

I think that's accurate, the lens elongate from about 3 inches to about 5 inches... the closer I focus the longer the lens becomes.
