I'm looking at the canon 9000, canon 9500, epson rs2000 and epson rs3000. I realize there is a huge difference in price and was wondering if it was worth it to go with the pigment models. Also, since I print only (for now) color is it worth it to buy the rs3000 over the rs2000. Two reasons I like the epson's are the wireless connection and larger tank capacities. I like the canon's because the software will let me print RAW files directly from DPP. However, I have not seen prints from any of these printers and there isn't any place nearby (within 100 miles) that I can view a print. So I don't have the opportunity to judge them on the most important factor, print quality. Any help will be appreciated.

I don't have any experience with those printers, but I know that with DPP I can print to my two HP photo printers. You may be misinformed in that regard.

Tony, I know that DPP allows you to print directly but the plugin that comes with the printer is supposed to allow much finer control.

I love my Epson R1900. I print a bit of B&W and have been quite satisfied.

A few years ago, stats showed that pro printing labs that used inkjet printers used epsons by a huge percentage. I do not know what the breakdown is now.

I just updated to an Epson 3880 refurbished from Epson for 999.99, considering that it comes with a full set of inks the cost is not that bad and it has larger carts that brings the cost of ink down. Have owned Epsons since the early 90's, first a 1200, then a 2200 for the pigment inks. If you plan on selling any prints be sure to get a printer with pigment inks, galleries in this area insist on pigment prints, or prints made of photographic paper. With any printer, make sure you are going to use it regularly if not you will have clogging problems. Make a 4X6 once a week at least, I also control temp and humidity in the room with my computers and printers and have never had a print head problem.

Thanks for all the info. By the time I make up my mind all the rebates will probably begone. I'm leaning toward the epson r3000 but my car needs tires. :(

It would really behoove anyone who's thinking of making pro quality prints to consider a pro model such as the Epson R3880. I speak as someone who has owned Epson Stylus Photos up until about 3½ years ago when I bought a 3800. By the time you empty a set of 80 ml cartridges on the 3880 you will have offset the price difference. Another factor is that the Pro models have maintenance cartridges where the waste ink goes instead of pads. When the pads fill up you have to replace the printer while when the maintenance cartridge fills up you just replace it with another one for less than $20 US. This is especially important if you like to make borderless prints, as I do.

I'm happy with the Epson Photo Stylus 1400. Prints 13" wide.

Thanks BillyR. Do all the lower priced printers have these pads for waste ink? What exactly happens when the pads are full? Does the printer stop working or do you get ink smeared on the print.

To the best of my knowledge, all the Epsons do. As I recall, when this happened on my R800 I got a message saying something like "Parts inside your printer will soon be due for replacement." It is my understanding that the next warning will be that they are due and the printer will stop working. At that time you have two options: Replace the printer or send it to an authorized facility to have the parts replaced, which are almost always the pads. In cases like this, it is always more cost-efficient to replace the printer, especially since by that time something better will be on the market.
