Found this guy on our pool skimmer. It was a big one too, had to stand back a foot or so to get the whole thing into the frame. First three were with flash, last two natural light...

Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L macro and 50D, which is a stunning combo.

Great shots Ed! Did you use extension tubes?

Very nice shots. I normally like to see insects in more 'natural' settings, but #2 is very cool.

No tubes, just the macro lens. I like number 2 also, sadly the pool skimmer as a background leaves a lot to be desired. It's kind of obnoxious in some of the shots.

shame about the background, clearly a stunning subject. Wonder if you could have transferred it to some greenery?

Lovely set of shots. Its certainly a beautiful dragonfly, possibly a Green Darner?

I wouldn't have tried, moving the skimmer with it on there was as far as I'll go to disturb nature for a shot. I'd rather just have the joy of showing it to my daughter and then leave it alone. Plus we don't have much greenery around here lately with the witch-hot heat we've had. My poor grass is hay now.

My dragonfly identity skills are weak, I know a few, Damsel, Darner, etc., but trying to figure out what they are is about as hard as trying to identify sparrows; Too many to keep track. I'm fairly certain this is a Green Darner though, if it's not it sure plays the part really good.

I managed to find a pic and info of one in one of my books and it certainly looks like one to me as well (although we dont get Green Darners in the UK unfortunately - wish we did as they are a fabulous colour).
