It seems I have outgrown my shoulder bag and am in need of something larger. I love the idea of the rolling style (the one that look like luggage), but I refuse to pay those kind of prices. I know I know, I spent good money on the equipment why cheap out on something that is supposed to protect it. The best reason I can think of is that it is still just a rolling suitcase with some padded dividers in it. So, has anyone else thought like this and attempted to Frankenstein their own rolling camera bag/case? If you've got any pictures, that'd be even better!
Right now I'm thinking about getting an inexpensive piece of rolling luggage and heading to a hobby shop to get the foam and give it the old college try.
Thanks.

These are priced very similar to roller bags you'd find at Target, etc. Hope it helps.

BTW, they are in the used department but listed as brand new (closouts)

Not sure what your budget is but the 1514 is also very harde to beat and is probably not much more thatn an inexpensive carry on and a camera insert:

I paid less than $200 for a Lowepro x450 rolling case with backpack straps - new!

but I did consider trying to build something... gave up as I was making a list of what to get, where from, and how to hold it together... I'm better taking photos than I am at building something to carry the gear

Yep I did. We have some Samsonite rolling cases that we use for weekend trips. I bought some pick and pluck foam and plucked away. I needed something to take my 500 on a plane as carry on. I normally use my Lowepro Photo Trekker AW II to carry my 500 around but it is too big for carry on. The Samsonite is 50cm by 35cm by 20cm

Camera on the left is the 1DIV, on the right is the 40D. The 500 f4 is down the middle. 1.4 TC is just seen popping through below the 1DIV and the 24-70 is below that. 430 EXII is below the 40D with the 70-200 f4 completing the right hand side. Not the prettiest but it works for me.

Wow that is great! Plenty of protection for the big gun. I can only imagine what the screener says when he or she opens it up.

Hobby store foam is of quite poor quality. It won't last long, doesn't protect as well, and leaves deposits on equipment over time. The type you want is "Supreem." Go here and get custom-cut, equipment-quality foam at decent prices:
