70-200mm f/4L IS with 2x Converter or 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS

Hi All

Looking for some advice

Will I get the same sharpness/quality using a 70-200mm with 2x converter than if i use a 100-400mm?

It will mainly be used for aviation photography (both static and air shots) with other bits here and there

I think the 70-200mm will be a better all rounder?

The 100-400 will be sharper. Plus, unless you're using a 1 series body, you'll loose AF by putting a 2x tcon on an f4 lens.

Will AF still work with the 1.4x tcon?

Also, Is "IS" a must when having it fully extended? Or could I can away with the non-IS version

AF is retained with the 1.4X TC as you will be 98-280/5.6. The 2X TC gives a 140-400/8 with no AF.

IS is very strongly preferred for airshows because you will want to be shooting propellor driven aircraft at shutter speeds of 1/200 and slower, which is hard to handhold well at focal lengths of 300mm or more.

1 series bodies can AF at f8. All the others f5.6. You loose 1 stop of light with a 1.4 tcon, 2 stops with a 2x. So, yes you will retain AF. The longer the lens, the more advantageous it is to have IS, or some form of support.

never used the 100-400L bet I'm pretty sure that would do better, plus it is f/5.6 instead of an awful f/8! so 100-400L by mile.

f/4 IS + 2x TC III isn't all that great, only brings in slightly more detail than upsizing with a 1.4x TC on it and that at least has AF

DP what camera body are you using and do yu have either lens.
As for IS,it all depends on the shutter speed I suppose, if you shooting fast, maybe not.
Check my sig out and I enjoy it, I haven't shot in anger yet though.
But try them all out see which you like.
