I am very impressed!. I've been taking football pictures for the first time and have struggled with the dark. Mine don't look anything like this. Unfortunately, I don't have a fast telephoto lens so I have struggled between blurry and dark (or both). Are you using AF for these shots and what lens did you use?

If you using AF, just keep pressing sown half way randomly to stay infocus, that's all. If you are shooting sports I would use a 50MM 1.8 while (if you wanted to) save up for the 70-200MM 2.8 or a 580 ex flash.

Mike - an f2.8 lens really is required to do this stuff with any chance of success. There are a bunch of good ones available. Like ACDC says, a 70-200 is really the minimum lens. There are a bunch of options out there.

I see a lot of threads about using flash at high school football games, and while it can be helpful, IMHO it is necesary and can also very limiting too .... maybe I am just way to old school. With today's camera and a little application of old film stategies, you can still get some decent shots. Almost all of these were shot at 1/400 @ f2.8. I would adjust the ISO as needed when field lighting conditions made it necessary (thanks for the tip Gavin), and would also go under exposed by up to a stop to keep minimum shutter speed above 1/320. 1/400 is still a tad slow... but hey, it is what it is.

Here are a few shots from last weeks game. Go out and have some fun shooting football tonight!

I have to agree.
I don't see using a flash at any sporting event.
For one I don't like the idea of being tackled by someone because I made them miss a catch with my flash.
I see people do it all the time at football and volleyball games.
I've got some shots posted at www.atown.net (external link).
Might not be as good as yours, but I've gotten some good one.

Man, those are some great shots!

I absolutely love shooting HS football! Playoffs are here, and the kids aren't the only ones excited about it! A game Friday night, and 2 on Saturday this weekend for week 1 of the playoffs! (Boy, that's going to be a lot of editing... )

Thanks for looking!

waldo - agree with ya on the flash thing, but it is a skill I am going to have to learn as I am sure someday I will need to rely on it... I just fall back on what has worked for me in the past. Most editors in our area want or require flashed shots.... oh well.

Mazer and keiffer - thanks all for looking an commenting.

Why?

I assume we're talking newspapers here... why do they require that flash is used? Just wondering...

Here is my understanding... on a given friday night in "football" season, there are about 20-30 football games going on inside their readership area, and their own guys can't cover the all - so they accept images from freelances to images of the games they can't get to. Given the deadlines, and the amount of material, and the marginal quality of a some of the non-flashed shots, they have set a minimum bar so they can quickly weed out the none-printable shots. Dark images + newsprint is not a good combination.

Some of us older dudes know how to squeze out some low light stuff because we had to... but realistically if I decided to contribute regularly I would need to take a few safe shots with flash to cover my posteriour. I suck at action flash photography... hence why I have been sucking you guys dry for knowledge in this area.

Ahhhh... that makes sense.

That's an awful lot of matches they cover in one paper... I trust they have a good budget

Also, it sounds like you could run a nice little business organising coverage of Friday night football, coordinating your team of freelancers and taking your (hopefully) healthy commission  ... ;) :p

well, I hate using flash in sport photography... but hey.. sometimes it's so freaking dark and 3200 is not an option.. if you shooting for yourself.. may be 1/320 is fine.. but editors want to see decent pics with faces, eyes... so doesn't matter if I like or don't.. I care flash with me, cause I never know what light condition going to be on HS field.. if I can shooting without flash - awesome... but if I need to use flash at end zone..oh well, I'll

Hmm. that makes sense, do they pay you for the pics that you turn in?
