are you finding the 70-300 too short?

when shooting birds, it's usually best to go as long as you can....

aahh, lens lust...

go enjoy what you have... when what you have doesn't meet your needs, look for something else...

otherwise you'll spend a small fortune getting stuff just because someone else got a nice shot...

I have this lens, as well as the Kenko TC that you are interested in. I really like the lens, but at times, I wish it was longer. I bought the TC, with hopes of more reach. With the TC the focus is slower and it will hunt around even after it locks focus onto a subject. It is really a challenge to shoot birds in flight, but it can be done.if you are shooting still or slow moving subjects in decent light, I would suggest manual focus to avoid these issues. The 7D does read the kenko and displays 420mm in the EXIF data.
I don't seem to use TC much, as the 120mm gain doesn't seem like enough upside to offset the downside. The 100-400 would clear all of that up, and you can still add the TC to that lens if you wanted to. I have thought about trading this lens out for that one too, but I like the 70-300L too much to part with it. I am also looking at the Sigma 150-500 and the 50-500. A 200mm gain just might be enough for me to make the move.
The August issue of "Shutterbug" mag has a review of this lens paired with a canon 2X III extender. I emailed the author to verify the setup, and he confirmed it. He said the setup was manual focus only. I haven't been to the camera shop to verify this yet, as I have heard that the Canon extenders will not physically fit the 70-300L.
