Welcome to the Art of Photography Exhibition

The Goal of this exhibition is to showcase, evaluate, and learn from the images posted by participants created with a sense of artistic statement. The statement may be planned in advance or naturally occurring.

Entries are not restricted by subject, composition, intent, camera, lens, media type; film or digital, color or monochrome, time of capture, post processing techniques, alternative processes, etc. In others words this is art and you get to express freely. No nudity per POTN rules. Each image can be submitted once in the exhibition.

Please abide by POTN rules for image entry in this forum!
State EXIF data and (optionally) a personal statement concerning your entry.

This exhibition is open to everyone and runs weekly. Cutoff time is Sunday 6pm Pacific Standard Time. Scoring cutoff time is Wednesday 6PM PST.

Judging is open to participants and the POTN community.
1st choice is 5 points, 2nd choice is 3 points, and 3rd choice is 1 point. You cannot vote for your image.

The winner of the last exhibition tallies the scores of the judges (by PM) and presents the total results for all images in the current exhibition at the end of the exhibition.

Critique is open to all participants and the top 3 place holders for the current exhibition will be responsible for critiquing the next exhibition. If you do not wish to receive critique state this in your entry.

The exhibition has 3 threads: images, critique (discussion), and social.
Please stick to the right thread for the right content.

Photography is a beautiful art form. Enjoy it. Share it.

Let me break the ice here. Everyone is welcome and I believe that once this thread gets going some of the nicest images will surface so hopefully there will be a lot to survey and participate in. The goal of this exhibition is to free up creativity so that we can all learn from each other without restriction yet on par with what may take place in a gallery or exhibition environment, i.e. the real world for the working photographer. I would hope that the community at large will embrace this concept and dazzle us with spectacular imagery. There is much to explore in what makes a great photograph. Hopefully this exhibition will generate a sharing of this wealth of knowledge.

The exhibition is open to modification should certain patterns emerge that need to be addressed such as continuous placement at the top. However I would like to think that between us the wealth of art will guide us all.

Here is a good article on the language of design for starters. I would like to see this thread get into design practice and what makes a photograph sing as well as gear and social aspects. Thanks to Allen for sharing the link.

Where do you get lost in the lingo? I'd be happy to help in that regard. What might be slower? The number of entries? This is brand new. It will take a few weeks or so to get going and if it dies on the vine the community spoke clearly regarding its acceptance.

It takes time to understand the language of art and it is visual however like math which is used to express relationships in nature once you master the language you can use it to further explore and create new art. For instance if I ask for a composition that features a play of textures one might get an idea of what that means. If I ask for a play of textures in a contrived setting with non animated objects that defines a different context. If I said I would like an image that features a play on textures and colors using soft transitions and natural shapes found in nature we are fed even more information to base a design upon. All 3 definitions will produce different results.

Yes, it takes time to learn, understand and then start seeing in a real visual way. The more you become aware, the more you will find your vision moving from more immediate gratification type subject matter to more complex images that have real staying power. I really found looking at the works of photographer that use the language in their work is a great way to start the process. Not trying to copy but to deeply look at their work and try and see if you can see the language in real situations. When you look at Bressons work for instance you start seeing things like repeating shapes. line, form and reason to take an image that go far beyond the rule of thirds and he had such a highly trained vision he could see it all within a fraction of a second. A lot Gibsons work is really more about negative space than subject matter. Ernst Haas's work was about color and form.

Also think of the way Weston thought when he said
"I see no reason for recording the obvious." - Edward Weston

"Anything that excites me for any reason, I will photograph; not searching for unusual subject matter, but making the commonplace unusual." - Edward Weston

"To compose a subject well means no more than to see and present it in the strongest manner possible." - Edward Weston

"This then: to photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a rock. Significant representations – not interpretation." - Edward Weston

Many new photographers are to literal in wanting to photograph the obvious (puppies, sunsets, etc)and still want them to be the obvious. But not many of these immediate gratification type images of what Weston calls the obvious have real staying power other than thats a pretty sunset. Ya usually read it, in a visual way, immediately. No reason to look any deeper for a trace of the creator of the image or any deeper meaning. And I'm not saying theres anything wrong with that its just not moving visually beyond the obvious.

Oh almost forgot these quotes by the great Walker Evans

This one particularly goes to what Joe is talking about.
"The meaning of quality in photography’s best pictures lies written in the language of vision." - Walker Evans

"Photography is not cute cats, nor nudes, motherhood or arrangements of manufactured products. Under no circumstances it is anything ever anywhere near a beach." - Walker Evans

This is where my head is at when it comes to art. This is what I want to recreate through a camera.
