Just got some new equipment today and now I have a 24-105mm and a 70-200mm f4. Before, I had 2 67mm lenses so I had the same B+W UV Filter. I'm interested in getting Polarizers now.

Do I need to get both a 67mm and a 77mm Polarizer or is there some way I can get one and just some adapter to save on costs?

You can get a 77 mm CPL and a 67-77 mm step-up ring, but you'll find that swapping filters every time you change lenses is a real pain. I suggest biting the bullet now and getting both 67 mm and 77 mm CPLs, if not immediately, as soon as possible.

Ya, good point on the annoyance of swapping. Already have my BH Order for a 67 and a 77 CPL so I'll keep the order in tact.

Thanks for the reply.

I have bought a few step-up rings and agree with the annoyance. I take the 77mm filter and rings and somehow don't use the filter(s) as much on the smaller diameters. It seems ridiculous thinking about it; how hard is it to just move the filter to the ring? But I've been thinking of getting a dedicated polarizer for my other lenses. The only problem with that is it uses up more space, but certainly not much.

Its not just that...its also a PITA trying to separate the CPL from the step ring. What Jon says...separate CPL for each lens diameter (at least for the lenses that get used most often).

My three most-used lenses all take 77 mm filters; I have a CPL for each one. So it's not just separating the filter from the adapter ring (and a CPL doesn't take up very much more room than a step-up ring, especially when you consider that the step-up ring will need more protection from bending than the filter).

I think it depends how often you switch lenses. If you're constantly switching between a couple lenses or use more than one body, then multiple filters makes sense. If you were using a CPL for the 24-105 and switch to the 70-200, there's a good chance you'd want a CPL on the 70-200 as well. Now it's time to switch back to the 24-105, do you really want to swap the filter again. Multiply that by 20 or 30 and you'd probably wish you bought separate filters. Personally, I don't switch that often, so I only need one CPL and a step-up ring :)
