Had my 50D for 2 years, no problems. I buy 5d Mark II Kit today and all of a sudden I have a black spot on the viewfinder that wasn't initially there. Not even 8 hours of having it and it shows up.

It doesn't affect pictures. It's not on the sensor. I've tried blowing air inside the camera with the mirror up and down as well as just giving a quick glide with my pecpad on both the sensor and the mirror. Also tried blowing air on the viewfinder itself.

The black spot won't go away. I'm debating on exchanging it just since it's showing up on a brand new camera but I know these are things photographers should just learn to deal with. Because of that, I'm just curious as to what you guys would do in my situation?

It's most likely dust on the focus screen. Usually just blow the junk out, or remove the screen and clean it. I did a quick search on the web and came up with this:

By the way, I remember when I purchased my 40D, I had a black spot show up when it was two days old. I tried blowing it out several times, but finally just lived with it. Two weeks later, it disappeared, and has never shown up again.

Thanks. Just tried the first step in that link and spot is still there. Looks like it's on the superimposed display. Blech. Maybe I'll just deal with it.

Anybody else have any opinions? Would you exchange it since it's a brand new Mark2 having these issues or just deal with it?

If you're not happy (which I think this is the case) exchange it. You paid a lot of money for it.
I would in a heartbeat!!

I have the same problem but hear this.. ONLY when I am using my Tamron 18-200 mm lens.

The black spot (its more like a half ring) does NOT show up on pictures taken with the same lens, only in the viewfinder. I only remember roughly when it started showing but cant link it to anything that I did differently or changed.

I dont know wtf it is, but is yours showing up even with different lenses?

If everything else on the camera works fine, ask yourself if you'd be willing to risk a bigger problem with different copy and then have to return that one.

yea it's prob a dust that got in the focus screen. i have a tiny speck which i could only see if i look at a bright white screen so i just deal with it. let me know if you find a way to clean it...and this is why i hate changing lenses outside where it's dusty.

Good point. I didn't try my other lenses. But, already Exchanged the set. No issues with current set.

I had the same issues with my new kit and it was on the focus screen what ever you do don't put your finger in there to remove the spot it will make it worse I had to order a new screen and it was an easy fix .. but if I were you I would simply return it and have it replaced. Or pay 60 plus bucks to fix your self and save the down time ..

Place is right near me thankfully so I stopped in there @ lunch and replaced. Their prices aren't too bad and was comparable to online so decided to purchase there instead of the typical BH/Amazon.
