in terms of final image quality (sharpness and detail). You're shooting at 1/250 sec which is right on the borderline of stopping motion in this type of sports action.

Actually, you are missing a 1 in that exposure. He said he was getting 1/1250s which is absolutely amazing at ISO800!
In the somewhat new, state of the art university arena here, I can only get around 1/500s at F2 and ISO1600.
Volleyball is very difficult to shoot properly (ie, get expressions and ball in the shot at the same time), and you did a remarkable job.

These shots are incredible. You have captured the action in great detail and the sharpness is right on. You have wet my appetite for indoor sport shots even more. I can't wait to get my 85mm and I only hope I can even come close to these. Nice work.

Great series. You make it look easy, and I know it is not.

Great shots! I struggle with this every weekend. I'm lucky to achieve 1/500 ISO 1000 using a 100 F2.

Jnycz, 1/500s at ISO1000, F2, that isn't bad at all!
In fact, that's pretty darn good compared to most vball venues!

well - went back....tried to mix things up... went to a 10D with a 2.8 lens. We won't be doing that again. the magic combination is 20D with an 85 1.8. - we will be sticking with that from here on out. Cheers all.

thanks 22 littlereasons.

OK, I turned my 85mm f1.8 back into B&H for the 85mm f1.2L rather than listening to someone who suggested I should keep both, sigh, but the 1.2L, while probably a great portrait lens, is just too slow for sports and the DOF wide open is way shallow, so I am going to reorder the 85mm f1.8 when I get my next set of lenses ... but I will keep the 1.2L also. So, have we decided the 85mm f1.8 is a good basketball lens, too?

Mark, did you see my reply about the Live Event thread you asked about a week or so ago? It's https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=81761

Thanks.... very good read with a lot of good information in it. The thread is a really good resource and a good read. I wish this forum had a good print function so I could archieve some of this stuff off for future reference. I have been thinking of doing some remote work with volleyball but I Just need to figure out what I do next.... keep working on the same stuff, try something different, or scale back. thanks again for the link amigo.

Oh - I start with basketball this week. I will let you know how the little 85 does. I have read a lot how the real guys do volleyball, and their advice, and frankly I just don't get the same results they do with the equipment they recommend. Kinda have developed my own sweet spot where and how I like to shoot the sport. I am wondering I will find basketball to be the same. Time will tell. Cheers.
