Hi I'm looking to buy a polarising filter either the Hoya Pro1 77mm Polariser, or the B+W 77mm Polarizer.
any diference or are they both the same quality, im hoping that they are both thin ones as it will be on a 17-40L on the 20d,have heard wider ones may cause vignetting is this correct?

I don't know about the vignetting, but I think you'd be quite happy with either one of those filters.

fwiw, lenstip.com did a review of various CP filters:

http://www.lenstip.com …arizing_filters_test.html (external link)

The B+Ws scored very well, the Hoyas not so well. See article for details, but their testing and scoring methods seem sound.

That's the site I reference when trying to figure out which brand/model to get while not spending an exorbitant amount of money.

You won't need the slim filter with the crop camera. Get the B+W F-Pro MRC polarizer (or the Kaesemann version)...it won't vignette, and it won't come apart unexpectedly like some Hoya polarizers are prone to do.
