I just go back from a vacation from some lakes in the Adirondacks. I went several places where I did not feel comfortable taking my expensive equipment. I threw my 300D (the original Digital Rebel) with the 18-55 kit lens in a small bag and kept it with me when I did want to risk the 7D.

This was taken during a canoe trip across Indian Lake. I know the sky is blown (and I knew it would be when I took it) but I didn't have a tripod or a flash and I didn't want to mess with multiple exposures and HDR.

This was taken of my kids on a motorboat ride. The boat was moored and I had to walk into waste deep water before climbing into the boat. I was willing to risk the 300D, but not the 7D or expensive glass. (These are my kids, and after 10 years or so, I still find it very difficult to get them all to smile nicely together; I am somewhat happy when I get 3 and the forth isn't too bad)

Ultimately we are all looking for a great result. Sometimes it doesn't matter how we get there, whether it's with 20MP or 6MP, $1000 glass or $100 glass. Some of my favorite compositions came from my 300D even though I have upgraded to a 1dsmrkii. Keep shooting until it gives up and then replace it for that piece of mind.

The rock stacks are probably not as large as they may appear, I would estimate 4' tall; I got down pretty low to take the shot.

I am guessing that they were stacked by someone on staff of the recreation department of the resort that I was staying it. The shot was taken at a clearing that they use for lunch during guided canoe trips on a somewhat deserted lake in the Adirondack State Park. At the resort, I noticed some crude stonewalls that used small rocks and stones, as shims, for the larger rocks in the same way as these stacked stones.

I had the 300d and in terms of function found absolutely nothing wrong with it. I sold it do a colleague and it's still working without any problems. The only reason I made the move was I wanted a slightly 'tougher' body as I was shooting out and about lots; I'm not the most careful of people!

I tend to be a gear snob with all of my other hobbies; photography is the exception. New 'kit' may make life a little easier but at the end of the day it's the user that takes the photo! (just MHO)
