On where to go for photos? We already have most of the stuff planned out according to what the family wants to do, but does anyone have any recommendations for good places for pictures? Maybe for like landscapes, street, cityscapes, skylines, and maybe even good locations for a male model. Anything really.
And does anyone know if I'm gonna have any problems with speedlights and triggers as a carry-on at the airport? Or problems with any photo equipment? I'm planning to bring one speedlight and one transmitter and receiver for on and off camera use. Or maybe 2 speedlights and 2 receivers if I decide to do that.

There are a lot of places that just ask to be in your pictures. Pearl Harbor comes to mind first. Shooting serfers on the North Side (I hope I remember the name correctly) - you will need a long telephoto though. The rainforest, the views from Diamond Head, and many many others.

Nice! Good thing Pearl Harbor and North Shore are already in our schedule. Our hotel is really close to Diamond Head, so I'll probably head over there some night after dinner. Where is the rainforest you're talking about?

If you are thinking about hiking to the top of Diamond Head, they do close at around 6PM I believe.

Did not know that it closed. Was hoping to go up there right after sunset or something to get a picture of the city lights. Thanks for letting me know!

Got it! :D Kinda wish I had more. Only have a 1 stop ND and a 3 stop ND. Gonna spend a week practicing that black card technique to try to substitute for a grad ND.

Oh yea, I got a (really) cheap CPL too. I'll be sure to pack that too! Thanks for the reminder Butch! x.x

^ Define "cheap"? Wouldn't want you to use IQ due to "cheapness"...

Very, very cheap. I got one Quantaray "Digital Circular PLD" and a Quantaray CPL. But if they can polarize, it'd be better than nothing though right?

Haha I just got back from Oahu a couple weeks ago, still going through and posting my photos.

Here's a list of the places I visited while I was there. They're all on the West, East, or South side of the island. I never got to visit the North Shore.

  • The Pali Lookout
  • The Valley of The Temples (Byodo-In Temple)
  • Waimanolo Beach (Watch out for Jellyfish!)
  • Makapuu Point (Amazing view if you're willing to climb over the fence and up the hill ;))
  • Koko Head Park
  • Diamond Head Crater (A great hike, but LOADED with tourists, very hard to get a chance to shoot at the top)
  • USS Arizona Memorial (Definitely go check this out)
  • Chinatown (In Honolulu, go in the morning around 9-10am there seemed to be quite a mix of people there. Difficult parking though)

Wow, nice list! What do you think was your top 5? We already have a day planned out to hit the USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor. Our hotel is pretty close to Diamond Head too, so I was thinking about getting up a few hours before sunrise and hop whatever fence they have (if they haven't opened yet) and hike up there to beat the tourists. Chinatown is probably somewhere on the vacation plan too. My parents LOVE Chinatowns.
