Hey.

Discovered this site while researching upgrading to a big boy lens.

Spent the past two years shooting wildlife (mostly in New Jersey) with a Canon 40D and 100-400 IS. Early this year I bought a Manfrotto tripod and became comfortable that I was eliminating most user error with respect to focus, but still I'm not happy with the lens' performance in that area.

So, the plan is to buy a used Canon 500mm f/4 IS as soon as a nicely priced one presents itself. Ruled out the 400 2.8 due to size and limited reach and the 600 4 due to size and the largeness of the minimum focal length.

For now, posting two shots ('cause I can't figure out how to embed to be able to show more).

The black swallowtail (last year, hand held), fun. He was hungry. The brown pelican (tripody), simple but hard won. Took several hours over several days (And it's a pelican...).

I have a bare minimum of technical knowledge and do only the most basic PP. Pretty much have everything to learn. Also color-blind, which, not helpful.

Site's inspiring and frustrating me already...;)
Brett

Welcome to POTN. Nice shots.

Not sure if you saw this, but here is a link, https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160897, to "how to attach photos" that you may find helpful.

Regarding the lens issue, I too am always looking for the "right" lens and have considered the 500mm. You might want to keep an eye on the Classifieds: Sell section in the Forum's Marketplace. You never know what you'll find.

Looking forward to more great shots from you. Thanks for sharing.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.

Nice images! I love the fact that I was expecting to see a butterfly and when I scrolled down it was the caterpillar. He's a real looker.
