I took this tonight at sunset. Its a stark departure from what I usually like for my attempts at sunsets: this one I "cooled" everything down whereas I usually warm them up and exaggerate the reds, oranges, and yellows. Do you think the color aspect of this image works? If not, what should I change? Comments on anything else are appreciated also. I'm not in love with it yet, so if you say "nothing, just delete it, its horrible," I won't be too offended.

Settings: ISO 100, f/22, 1.6 sec exposure, 18mm focal length

I think it works here. Since it has a blue cast, it looks like sunrise. But that doesn't make much difference. The trees help the photo a lot by adding something to look at besides the sun and water.

Nice and subtle. I like the colors.

My eye eventually drifts to the left edge, and finds nothing to bring me back. But, I'm sure if there had been something over there you would have included it to provide a 'return' feature.

I like it - very cool colours... literally too :P

I'm really not fond of your watermark though.

The horizon isn't level - essential with water.

You're correct, there was not anything on the left for me to include as a "return" subject. But thanks for the opinion; I agree and I'll try to remember that next time I go out there.

Its just a basic watermark that I made with Lightroom; last time I tried making one in PS I got some serious creativity-block and gave up. I am looking to change it though, I just don't know what I'll change it to yet.

Not to disagree with you, but the horizon line matches my line in Lightroom as close as I can get it. I think it appears more off-level than it is because the trees were not vertical; they leaned inwards toward the shore slightly from getting pounded by hurricane winds every few years.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to review my image. All the comments were very valid and insightful. They are much-appreciated.

It is not level as mentioned......just a slight level is all it needs. If it were mine, I would crop out the fir tree as close as I could to the dead tree. The colors are lovely.

Beautiful shot, and i quite like the colors. to MY eye, I do see the horizon as being slightly tilted to the left. Even if it is the trees on the left causing an optical illusion, I do see it as being tilted, like the others do. very nice image.

Hey mate I was just wondering.. did you use a GND or an ND filter to be able to do the long exposure at day time? Or was it fairly dark for you to be able to use a long exposure without it being completely over exposed?

I discovered that I couldn't change the level in lightroom by a small enough increment for some reason. Photoshop let me do it properly, so now it should be properly leveled and the tree on the far right cropped out.

I did not use any ND or GND's. I wish I had some to play with. For this shot the lake was relatively calm and the sky almost the same brightness as the lake, thus I didn't really have anything to blow out. I just stopped way down and dropped my ISO as low as I could which enabled me to get a somewhat longer shutter time.

Now that's better. The water had begun to run down my monitor.
(humble attempt at humor)

Nice shot BTW

That's a really nice photo, good work! I think the colors work because of the sunset can make everythin different colors anyway. Very nice!
