So after many weeks of researching and debating which body to purchase I finally took the plunge and bought the 5d II yesterday and should be here by the weekend or early next week. I initially wanted to buy the 1d MK III and had almost bought it but then I was looking at most of my shots and they were mainly of family and friends and b-day events. So I thought to myself that would I really need a fast camera if I am shooting mainly portraits and people? I also do wantto shoot sports but majority of my current shots have been people.

I hope I made the right move and yes 1ds mkii would have been better but I am thinking about weight as well and I want something more travel friendly. Also, hd video will be added bonus. I don't need video but it's a nice feature to have. Although I haven't used either 5d2 or 1d series bodies at all, somehow I still wish if I had purchased the 1d MK III. I guess I will see how 5d2 will be with my 28-70 and 70-200 MK II lens.

Karim.

Mines at home waiting to be opened. FWIW - I debated the exact same cameras. Dropping $2k on something used is something I have a hard time doing. I figured a new 5DII was the way to go - especially since the original 5D is sill "usable". The 1DsII is nearly 10 years old at this point.

I don't know about you... but the xD/xxD bodies are still a bit "short" in the grip area for me. Which is why I have my cameras gripped. It may add a little bit more weight, but it provides much better support for my hands and much better balance on my heavier lenses.

I'm not saying that you made a bad choice. But if your hands are on the bigger side, then you'd likely be considering a grip (which then adds weight and takes away the travel-friendly aspect when compared to say a 1D/1Ds body).

Congrats and have fun.

I actually have held the 5d mkII before and it fit my hands very comfortably. I havent had an opportunity to hold any 1d series yet, but just from the many talks here and reading articles of the sheer size of the camera, I am sure it would be very heavy for me to use casually. I am positive that within a few months I will buy 1d series as my heart is too set on that camera. But for now, I hope the 5D2 will meet my requirements and I will be pleased with my purchase. I just hope the price doesnt drop all of a sudden since I have been hearing everywhere that 5d3 will be announce either this or early next year.

I got mine used since it was $400-500 less and I thought it was worth the risk, esp buying for a reputable seller.

Congratulations - 5D mk 2 is a really, really nice camera. One thing that comes to mind since you're just getting into photography - Don't forget to buy you a Speedlight, because the 5D doesn't have a flash.

cheers,

David
