I have only made a few conversions to B&W. This is one of my latest. Personally, I'm not thrilled with it, but I really am just beginning to learn.
C&C is welcome.

I'd need to see the original to say which is better, but it's a nice shot. I've not seen woods like that before. Very creepy. :)

very creepy, lots of detail and contrast. Id say you should be very pleased with it for your first (or around there) try at B&W!

Good detail. I like it.

For some reason, the darker area on the top right hand corner bugs me a bit. It's because, the rest of the image is so well distributed and for me to see the darker area on the right corner don't do it for me. Perhaps, you can dodge it a bit.
Contrast is good for my taste.

Try to make it smaller so viewer like me who don't own big monitor can see it better as a whole.

I think you nailed why I'm not too impressed with this one. The upper right region is a bit too dark and foreboding for me too. Creepy wasn't the look I was going for, but I sure found it.
I'll try adjusting that region and see if I can improve it.

I dropped the size of the B&W post and I'll post a smaller version of the original below.

Here is the original. As you can see, it's pretty nice all by it's self. I chose this image just for the challenge of getting it right.

This shot is right next to the beach on Kauai. The sand is literally 2 feet past the trees on the left.
