Hi all.
Which one would you prefer? The 85MM 1.8 or the 100MM 2.0? The lens would be used for volleyball, Basket Ball, Football etc. I'm afraid that 100MM will be too strong for Volleyball , Is it? If It is all I have to do is Back up:rolleyes:   .. 100MM Wins??

canon weight ;)

100mm us a little too long for basketball (for me) - the 85even on 1.6 crop covers 2/3 of the court area around the key, you just have to be on the right side

volleyball you can shoot on a 300 if you wanted to, ive seen all focal lengths carried in...i personally hate shooting volleyball from the side, and 100mm would fall short of my needs

i'd go with the 85

The 85 will not take a TC. Wish it would.

Contrary to Blinking, I have tried to shoot a 300 f2.8 at volleyball, and frankly I don't like it - I would rather have the extra speed and alter my location. Besides not liking shooting at 2.8, and also I don't like the very limited Field of View. If I had my sons video game tuned reflexes, perhaps, but I don't. Lastly, I love shooting a $320 lens, rather then a $3800 lens.

Between the two lenses you mention, I think it is sixes. I have the 85, and can easily recommend it. I have also seen praises for the 100 - and depending on where you will be shooting from - it's reach could be nice. But if you are going to be under the basket - an 85 and 50 would do just fine. I would also look at a wide too just for fun and variety.

I am sure there are others out there that can give you some opinions as well. With enough light, a good 70-200 can work, but again were talking 2x to 4x the price and I don't they they are as sharp as the tiny Canon primes. Cheers and good luck.

I've used both and feel that the 100mm was just a bit too long for volleyball. The 85mm/1.8 is sharp as a tack and very fast focusing. I like both lenses, but the 85 will always be my first choice for gymnasium sports.

It all depends on the person... I prefer the 100mm over the 85mm for volleyball :D

Easier to "fill the frame" in my opinion.

wow... my apologies.. didn't realize I reopened a dusty 4 1/2 year old thread....lol

Both the 85 and 100 will take the Kenko extender.

85 f/1.8 for basketball, 135 f/2.0 L for volleyball. Both seem to be the best one-lens solution for each sport.

I've owned both a couple of times and currently have the 85. For VB, I think I'd prefer the 100 for the reach, for hoops, I could go either way but find that the exif from my 70-200 seems to hover right around 105mm so again, the 100 gets the nod. here's the twist...all that said, I seem to put the 85 on the camera far more often than I ever did with the 100. I think its a more versatile focal length on a 1.3 crop. Obviously, that does factor in as well. FWIW, I did a three day trip to Disney recently, and shot 98% of it with the 85, its that versatile!
