Infrared conversion?

The wife gave me a 7D for my last birthday, was thinking of selling the 50D and using the money for another lens, but think I really want to do some infrared captures. Shot a few rolls in the 70's, but processing was a pain, and so was working through that dark red filter. From reading up on it it seems the best way to go is having the body converted. So anyone who has had a body converted, is it worth it?

IMHO, absolutely. I've converted a 20D first, most recently a 5D1. Lifepixel for both. Here's (external link) some recent images.

Has anyone on here used Spencer's for an IR conversion? They are lower on pricing for conversions. Another question. Opinions seem to be that a larger pixel camera is the better choice for conversion, would I be better off selling the 50D and using another body?

I've had two bodies converted to IR ... 10D to Deep B&W IR and a 5D to SuperColor IR ... both converted by Lifepixel and both work great! Don't know anything about other companies.

I'm happy with my 10D even though it's "only" 6.3mp. I may not be able to have huge prints made but how big do I want them? 8x10's are great!

edit: Just looked in my living room ... I have two 11x16 IR photos (matted & framed) from my 10D and they look fine too. Guess I can print bigger!

How much did it cost to get the 10D converted to IR? I have a very clean 10D and don't know what to do with it so I guess i will make a good IR body.

Of the two conversions, which do you prefer? Can you desaturate the SuperColor and get the same look as the Deep B&W? I was thinking of the Deep B&W look was the one I prefered, but would be nice to go both ways.

I much prefer the Deep B&W and wish I'd had that conversion done to the 5D too but thought it would be nice to have both. If memory serves me, you can change the Super color IR to somewhat the same as the B&W but I'm to lazy  so I probably won't.

Looks like Lifepixel.com is having a special ... standard IR conversion for the 10D is $250 ... plus $50 more for any other type of conversion (Deep B&W, Super Color, ...)

LifePixel's "off season" special has been going on since January at least. The Wife got my camera converted in May as an anniversary gift to me. They did a fine job. Camera was gone three weeks. Works like a charm.

I, too, considered Spencer's, but I've heard tales of increasingly erratic customer service about them over the past year. Once LifePixel lowered their prices, it was a no-brainer. And I went with the 720nm conversion, just to give me the flexibility of false color and deep B&Ws.
