Hey.

New; intro'd myself in the wildlife section. Quick review--shoot wildlife (Hence...), NJ, Canon 40D, 100-400 IS, upgrading lens ASAP, minimal technical knowledge.

Here are two birds I like from this year--the tufted titmouse pre-tripod. The burrowing owl on the post, post. Yes, intentional...

Hey BMK -- where did you find the owl? I've lived in NJ most of my life and almost never see them? I was in Burlington cty for most of it and am in Somerset cty now.

Hi E.

The owl shot is from a trip to Florida. Burrowing owls are by far the easiest to find, living on the ground, not so afraid of people, and active (awake at least) during the day.

Welcome to the forum Brett. I like both of these but the Burrowing Owl is a stand out. Very well exposed and a nice pose captured, they wisely keep a watchful eye on the skies for predators. That's likely a 2x2 post it's perched on which helps give an idea just how small these birds are. I've photographed them in Florida myself and hope to go again next year.

It's important to remind anyone that plans to photograph these birds that they're protected by law and that you must allow them their space. Heed the warning signs and taped-off areas and move slowly to avoid stressing them, especially in the late spring/early summer during nesting time. For the most part they're pretty tolerant of people, respecting their space helps to preserve that trust.

Thanks x3 and Thanks, Steve, for reminding me to be careful with how I present information. Usually I know my audience--that I'm speaking to known wildlife photographers who are familiar with most protocols--and even then I'm careful. Here, I just wasn't thinking.

No worries Brett, I was making mention of the details for the sake of those that pop in and may be unfamiliar with these beautiful birds and their protection status. Like yourself I think most bird photographers place the welfare of their subjects first. Their are many shining examples right here in this forum. It's great to have you here, I hope you'll post often.
