Newborn photos full frame goodness :)

2 bodies: 5dmk2 w/ canon 50 f/1.4, 5dmk2 w/ 85L.

I will admit it was alot of hard work and I do prefer shooting events. 3.5hrs session. What a different world it is taking photos of a newborn vs everything else I've done in photography. 1st time I've taken photos of a fresh newborn

I achieved my goal in getting aprox 30+ unique photos with aprox 1/2hr to shoot. The other 3 hrs was pure crying/peeing/screamin​g etc :P

Very nice. Third one is priceless.

More then 30 photos is great result when taking photos of infant.

Curious though, why such high ISO, 1600? with speed into the thousands? The images would be much cleaner if you drop it 2 or 3 stops.

oops sorry Alan yes I meant post processing in photoshop or similar, just to give them a tweak. I notice you don't have image editing ok on your profile, but wondered if you were planning on doing any tweaking.

(I think I must be itching to tweak them a little)

I do agree. My logic is I wanted a fast shutter speed ( a bit excessive) and I can deal with everything post processing later. I wanted no hand shakes on my end. I had very little time to take advantage of the sleep period in this extremely cranky baby. With my inexperience in shooting such little things I was climbing a 3 step ladder to shuffling blankets and was recovering from the massive pees that I was blessed with LOL!! The room was dark due to outside weather.

Kathfern, I am somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to post processing. I do look at baby photos and I dislike some styles of overly processed cupi doll looking babies. I did do some patching and skin cleanup but otherwise I prefer a cleaner real skin texture baby with some real reddish tones. Toning down the red paths is what I commonly see on baby photography and I find it making the babies look unhealthy.

I use the Xrite color passport to reproduce real colors. Using natural light is ridiculously easy in this baby shoot. The day I took these photos it was very dark outside with torrential rain. This is one reason I used such high ISO so I can maximize light sensitivity in the dark room (window light)

These look nice. I agree about high ISO. You were shooting your 85L @1/2500? You could have EASILY shot these at ISO400 @1/600, ISO200 @ 1/300, or even at ISO100. It may be JPEG compression artifacts, but there's something going on with the IQ. Also, I think some of these could use a little more contrast...I think. Finally, I think I would pull back on the reds a little bit on the skin tones. I know this is a baby and everything, but IMHO it would better to pull back on the reds a little.

That said, these are very cut shots. I like them a lot!

Hey Nick I wont disagree. I'll admit I was sweating due to the heat in the room. The time frame of getting the photos is tight and I was uncomfortable with that. I guess I may try to adjust the red paths.

On my IPS panel I honestly dont see any artifacts. I'm not sure what I am not seeing........ print is my crutch I guess

So much stuff going on and time is just flying!!
