I do love circular trails! Middle shot is my 5D2 for an hour. The other two are Provia 100 for 4.5 hours with my Mamiya 645's.

I love #1, awesome shot! Do you start shooting at dusk to get a little bit of the purple color in there? I've tried a few star trails in Death Valley and the trails came out fine but it was pretty much total black otherwise, lol. Excellent shot!

I start at the end of astronomical twilight - which is to say total darkness. I then stop 1 - 2 hours (or more in the future, I'm thinking) after moonrise, depending on the phase of the moon. The blue sky I think is just coming from the moon lighting up the blue sky. Here's an example where the cable release failed and stopped before moonrise, showing what Provia film does with only starlight:
