My sigma 85 1.4 just started mis focusing. WHat are my choices, besides exchanging it? I don't think I can ma it cause it only does it like one out of every 10 shots.

sorry to hear that. i would be rather disappointed myself. but if it only does it 1/10 shots i wouldnt MA it either because logically it would be off all the time. tough choice, i personally would want it perfect everytime considering how much it cost new. i would call someone about exchanging it or call sigma. i called sigma once about my 30 just to see how easy it was to talk to someone and i had no trouble talking to a real person on the phone. was on hold for all of a minute

I had a sharp copy @ 1.4, but I will try my other lenses also and see if they miss. I just got my camera back from canon 2 days ago.

i have a sigma 50 and heres one thing i noticed with sigma

i ALWAYS use the center point. if the DOF is not too thin i will focus and recompose. the outside points miss like crazy with my sigma 50mm. dunno if the the lens or the super old AF system in the 5d2.

my sigma 50 also has the best hit rate when its bright as well. i noticed that when is dark it will lock on but completely be off severely.

seems like even when the lens is accurate and spot on in controlled test it tends to have misses even when it says its locked in.

I've heard great stories about the sigma 85 but i would never get rid of my 85L for it. even if the AF is in fact slower my 85L never misses unless I'm shooting at 1.2 and i took a breath when i took the shot and is completely my fault.

I will say this, my 5D outer AF point just plainly sucks ass. It couldn't lock focus at all withe sigma 50 at low light, where the 60D or my previous 7D would deal with that no problem at all.

With 60D, I 'm ok to shoot wide open with outer point, but with 5D, I always always use center point.

Earliest version of the 85/1.4 has a known problem with outer AF points on some Canon cameras. There is a firmware upgrade to fix the problem... just send it in to Sigma.

There's info somewhere about how to check the firmware the lens is using.... Something is recorded in the EXIF. Do a search here on POTN, maybe you can find more info and check it, before sending it in. (I'd send it anyway, no matter what firmware is installed.)

Look at your shooting technique for the 10% that didn't work.

If you're getting 90% keepers out of your lens, then the 10% are user error.
