I think your sigma is a male and likes to focus on women's legs. Just have it watch a chick flick and it should start working fine again.

Downs Photography - you see how ever misfocused shot is the same focus point....??? given its a 5D then i can partially agree you are using a focus point that is known to fail on focus failure.
and you can thank canon for that.
but there is enough contrast there it should have either failed and focus hunt or just not approved the shot anyways.

i would love to see you fanboys explain these as user error.
i love how people immediately say its user error when a lens or body misfocuses.

its so frustrating to see someone so educated in the world of cameras, lenses and photography immediately jump on the user error bandwagon ESPECIALLY on a sigma lens.... every damn one of their prime lenses focus like turd soup.. (sorry i dont know what that means it just came to mind lol)

the biggest problem here is that the communication between the lens and body completely failed... the camera and lens "told each other" the image was in focus.. when it clearly is not.
the little boy and girl shots are just dead ringers for sigma focusing..

the guy focused in the background could be attributed to the camera jumping focus because it was on the edge of the focus point area.

BUT

if you are getting keepers in the upper 90% then i would say you are ok.

i read something long ago about a 1 out of 10 keeper rate being normal... now i dont think that was focus related, more action and moving subject related but if you are comfortable with your abilities to put the focus point where you need it to be and taking the shot without moving the camera a mile when you push the button then i will side with you.
i also side with you on the sigma focusing issues.

i recently purchased a sigma 24-70 f/2.8 10lb gorilla... and 24-35mm was dead on but around 40mm-70mm was way wayyyyy off. it clearly misfocused.
and guess what... being a zoom you cant MA it.
it got sent back.

but 10% misfocus rate... yeah, pretty common especially for side focus points.
but those are pretty bad so its hard to say which it was, the lens or body.

Once again Canon 85mm 1.2LII.

That was so helpful and insightful! Do you feel better ?

Guess my eyes aren't that good- too bad the OP didn't include 100% crops of the supposedly focused areas.

I also agree with the focus and recompose idea.
