35F2 has better build compare to 1.8 cost less compare to 1.4 and IMO would have better range on 40D.

I've already got the 35L

You will not regret having 1.4 when you need it it.

f1.4 to me was super nice and years from the f1.8
I'd go for the 50 f1.4 if i had the cash
On a side note, I would love Canon to follow on Nikons 35mm f1.8G
What a nice lens and so inexpensive is silly not to have one, i had the 35mm f2 and miss it, but I think the Nikon G lens is nicer and cheaper.
I hope Canon follows
