Called up Canon. They are taking it back and replacing it rightaway with another refurbished one. 24-105L is in stock, but not 50mm. So I guess I will have to wait for 50mm. No arguments from Canon. Impressed with their CS first time.

Sounds good. Every time I've called them they've been very helpful.

I just received a 24-105L from Canon direct recently, and it looked great, also seems to be ok as far as performance, but I think I'll definitely go over it meticulously now having heard your experience. Best of luck with your troubles.

I will post it later today. I think all refurbished items now have a small red punch mark on the mount. Both of my lenses have it. I am not sure other people have it or not, but it's definitely something new. Good thing people can't sell refurbished items as new anymore.

yea definitely let me know about the red punch. i just picked up a 24-105L from a seller that said it was brand new. it looked and feel brand new. but haven't had a chance to double check against your photo of the red punch.

it would definitely help out a lot. look forward to the photo. thanks.

^ it's pretty noticeable on the back mount of the lens, if you don't see it, then yours probably isn't a refurb.

on the backmount of the lens as in on the silver mount where there's a date code of UX or UU, whatever?

This "red punch" is not index mark for aligning with one on the body? Just making sure as if you dealt with just EF-S lenses before they don't have one.

^ nope.

i noticed mine before i sent it back to canon for calibration, mine seemed like a red sharpie mark inside a hole.

(and to the question earlier, its inside the silver part of the lens) inside a hole, its pretty noticeable. if you don't see it at first glance, its not there lol.

This is how the red punch hole/mark looks like on Canon factory refurbished lens. This is 50mm f/1.4 and had the same mark on 24-105L refurbished. Let me know if others actually see the same mark on their non-refurbished lens from Canon as well.

^ yep, got those two marks on my 50L and 24-70L

i believe all canon lenses (with a metal mount) have that hole in the back mount, its just the refurbs that have the red mark inside of it.
