After trying the manual, the retailer and Canon Tech I continue to have this question unanswered.
A couple of months ago I went to C.fn III 8 and set the VF Illumination to "ENABLE" for low light focusing issues. I generally shoot in "One Shot" It works fine, illuminating the black squares in red for a flash. It also is fine in "AI Focus". However, in AI Servo the squares remain black and there's no red blink or flash or nada! Is this as intended or is something not functioning properly besides my head.
Thanks for any and all help!

It's continuously focusing...you don't get any focus confirmation.

Thanks very much for the responses! The peculiar thing is that neither Canon tech nor the retailers 24-7, "after the sale tech help" could provide the answer.
Should have come here first!

You don't need Canon tech support, nor any other 24-7 support to teach you how to crack open the book.
The answer to your question is clearly stated at the page 86 of the Owners Manual.

This AF mode is for moving subjects when focusing distance keep changing. While you hold down the shutter button halfway, the subject will be focused continuously.

With AI Servo, the beeper will not sound even when focus is achieved.
Also, with focus confirmation light in the viewfinder will not light.

All the best and keep reading..

Hermeto, I actually exhausted the manual as well as 2 other very good books, "The Magic Lantern Guide" and the "7D Digital Field Guide". I have the manual downloaded to my computer and I printed it in larger format upon receiving my camera for my old eyes. Book cracking wasn't the problem! I saw early on and apparently misunderstood page 86 of the manual.
As you pointed out, it says "the focus confirmation light will not light". I interpreted that light to be the green focus confirmation light in the viewfinder and not the red illumination lighting of the focusing clusters via Cfn3 8.The latter is the one over which I'm confused and attempting to light . In more than one canon tutorial it shows it will light up red even in AI Servo.
It either does or does not!
Thanks for everyone's patience.

Actually, this is an excellent point!

We all know how instruction manuals can be boring and confusing, there is no question about that, and there is no way to fix it..

The one and only way to work around that fact, IMHO, is to read with the manual in one hand, and the camera in another.
Everything you read, try immediately on the camera!
Every setting, every option, every feature you can try right away.

Second, it is very important not to skip over things.
Is something is unclear, confusing, illogical - ask a question and don't give up until you fully understand it!
Don't forget: knowledge gained in free, open discussion is never forgotten!

Third, once you go beyond the 'geography' of the camera, when you fully understand what button does what - experiment!
This forum is full of people who will be happy to discuss finer aspects of photography with you.
But, reading comes first!

All the best, looking forward to further discussions..

Couldn't agree more! But what's the answer on the "no red focusing screen squares display" in AI Servo. I read and understand the green confirmation light not showing (p86) in AI Servo! Am I to conclude that the red illumination won't flash either in a AI Servo?
I was hoping someone with a 7D could or would definitively confirm that there is or is not a red display option in AI Servo.
The question seems easy enough...not so sure the answer is! ;)

Definitively, there is no red squares displayed in AI Servo, that's pretty much the case with all Canon EOS cameras, not only with 7D!

Try to think this way: both the green doth in the viewfinder and red square in LCD (and ZoomBrowser image) denominates the same thing: focus confirmation.
Since AI Servo always keep guessing and adjusting, it never achieves the actual focus lock.
Hence, you never see the confirmation of something that's never happened.

At least, that's how understand the whole thing..

Thanks for hangin' in there with me on this!! That's how I originally understood it until I watched some of Canon's Tutorials and then the whole thing got just slightly clearer than mud!
Hopefully with enough time logged with the camera and available info I'll be able to help someone down the road!
Thanks again!

The manual is quite dry. You can find data, but not details.

Buy David D. Bush's book written for the 7D, and it will make it a lot easier for you to understand the manual :)

This one at Amazon (but you don't have to buy it here):
