I took this photo last week after getting my new Sigma lens shipped to me. It's by the New York Public Library next to Bryant Park. I love the detail in this street light.
It was taken at f/3.2.
Thank you

Thanks, picked up a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. I like it so far.

I think compositionally it would be better to crop (or take) this in portrait mode. The street background is distracting for me, when there is so much detail to take in of the statue.

cheers, Paul

I agree with above completely, I think that the bg stuff is a bit much. That bird on the sidewalk grabs my attention every time I glance at the pic :-)

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, now that you point it out, there's too going on behind the light. Even if I were to crop out the bird, there's some people I couldn't crop out. I took it at f/2.8 hoping the background would be blurrier.

It is blurred but to improve the bokeh, you need to use a longer lens

cheers, Paul

but you said f3.2?? To be honest at f/2.8 i would expect a much narrower depth of field then is shown

Oh yeah, this was at f/3.2, oops. So a longer lens, meaning like a zoom would improve the bokeh? I just thought use a lower aperture.
Thanks

Lowering the aperture does decrease the DOF. However, DOF is also dependent on the focal length of the lens and the distance to where you are focusing
Its worth checking out this link (external link), which also contains a DOF calculator.
