First... You don't really need the CD, certainly for a 20D...
Second... The downloads from Canon only update already installed software...

I would be disappointed to not receive a copy of DPP (unless I already had it). Most people aren't into registry hacks to get software running.

The newer DSLR's have one for the manual and one for the software, not sure if the 20D was like that... If it says software rather than manuals, that would be the one...

When I didn't have my XT's CD on hand I got the software running from only Canon's website. I have absolutely no idea how, but it is definitely possible.

It's probably on there, but I don't think it matters. In order to download the latest and greatest all I believe Canon wants to see is some version of their software already installed.

"DPP" stands for Canon Digital Photo Pro, just in case you don't know. It's used for RAW viewing and conversion. Zoombrowser is used for cataloging and JPEGs. The only other "essential" for general is EOS Utility to be able to interface with the camera. All those can be downloaded for free in current version from Canon website.

I never had 20D (had 10D and 30D), so not entirely sure what came on it's CD. But anyone using the camera will want to download the updates to all the softwares anyway... There have been many newer versions in the years since, with a lot of improvements. The manual can be downloaded in PDF format, too, if needed.

AFAIK, just going from memory when I bought 10D and 30D, there were separate manuals for the software and the camera... But just one CD with all the software on it. More recent models come with two CDs, one with the software, the other is simply more of an electonic sales brochure with Canon system info to tempt you to spend more money.

Not so sure it's possible to download anything (all the downloads on the Canon web-site are upgrades AFAIK) - so without having an earlier version installed (or the old disks) - I don't think the Canon web-site will be of any help.

What probably WOULD help (just a guess, but based on some experience) - would be to call the tech support line and explain the situation - I think if there's still any software around that would work with a 20D (not sure if the newest stuff is backward compatible - at least not sure if it's backward compatible to a camera that may have preceded DPP ??? ) -Canon is very good about being as helpful as possible.

If all else fails, Google's free Picasa software will open RAW files for pretty much any camera (I'd certainly assume it would open the RAW files for a 20D) - it can also make most of the same adjustments that DPP can make - it has a sharpening tool, and I think a noise reduction tool - plus all the usual adjustments like exposure, contrast, fill lighting, even an GND "filter" effect that works well...and a whole bunch of other stuff.

If it doesn't have noise reduction, there are a few free noise redution programs you can download. The noise reduction on the newest version of DPP (as well as the addition of "unsharp mask") isn't the greatest, but it's great for a free program.

Another solution would be to borrow a disk with the Canon software or maybe have someone burn a copy of it - from there you can "upgrade" after installing an older version. I haven't ever used "Zoombrowser" (or the MacIntosh equivalent) even though I've had it for 8 years or so - I have used "Canon Utilities" a couple of times only to do tethered shooting - not a common technique for most people.

The most "bang for the buck" if buying software is probably finding a used (or "old stock" on the internet) disk for Photoshop Elements 8 - While it came with an older Adobe Camera RAW version it can be updated for free from Adobe to ACR version 6.x - which works much better on the newer cameras - not sure if it makes a difference with the 20D...I'd bet that if you (the seller) or the owner put a "wanted to buy" listing on the classifieds here on POTN for an older version of Elements, there would be people willing to sell it cheap or even give it away (or lend it to install and then have you mail it back).

For those who have the patience and the ability, there's always GIMP, which is (from what I've read and heard, but not experienced) able to do what PhotoShop CS5 can do (and in some cases is even more advanced) - just tricky to learn and doesn't have all the tutorials of CS5 (free vs. $1000-to close to $3000 this shouldn't come as a surprise).

Good luck - if I were in your shoes I'd call Canon's tech support first, be friendly and honest and I'd be willing to bet they'd hook you up at no charge. I'm always amazed when I read some very long threads where people go back and forth about different issues when a quick toll-free phone call to Canon's excellent support team would give a quick, concise and accurate answer.

Peace,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!
