iPad is just as overrated as the iPhone. Pretty worthless.

I do have a B&N Nook Color that I rooted into an Android tablet - it's nice for showing photos on quickly. But it is a ton cheaper, and I got it for $50 off list price, and I use it mostly for e-book reading anyway so the photos are just an added bonus.

I think all the other tablets that are larger are overpriced.

I'm actually typing this on a rooted Nook Color (running Cyanogenmod 7 instead of the original Nook software). I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on a tablet that I knew I wouldn't really get much out of, since they are mainly media consumption devices. There is very little on terms of productivity you can do on a tablet, that wouldn't be a lot easier/faster on a notebook. That being said, its nice for showing off photos (the smugmug app is great if you have a smug galleries), reading books in color, email, web surfing, etc. Not a necessity, but fun to goof around with. One neat thing on the nook, is that it has a microSD slot. I've taken jpgs with my camera (in a SD to microSD adapter) and phone, then popped them into the nook for viewing, emailing, etc. You need to be a bit of a nerd to go the nook route, but the general idea is the same.

An iPad is almost useless for photography other than as a viewer. For photo editing you need a laptop w/ external display. I find my iPhone (or any smart phone) very handy when out doing photography.

Just sold my Macbook Pro last night, rarely used it anymore.

Have every intention of getting an Asus EEE Transformer with keyboard dock.

Meh. I saw it the other day on the tech blogs. Think that is more of a hybrid netbook. I want the ultra portability of the tablet, with the option to be a netbook when desired.

I'm looking at an ASUS U36 series. 19mm thin, 9+ hour battery life, 13.3" screen and 250gb-750gb HD options.

Size of a tablet, slightly thicker, battery life of a tablet but the power of a full PC.

Tablets are nice but I'd rather spend my money on the ASUS U36 over the tablet since it's limited.

I've seen a big boom of iPads ever since it came out but I started to see a couple of users here with em and what not. Is it really that great or can I still be old school with my laptop? Granted..I need to sell my Sony Vaio since it's outdated by technology by four years already. I feel like it's just an iPad is an oversized iPhone 4 which I have. x.x

Prove me wrong or is there a decent tablet that is with the iPad but costs less? I don't know what my next purchase should be gaming laptop, or something just for photography. Thanks for the advice!

the ipad is only useful for heavy apple users because of the integration for photography though its probably better to go with a xoom or samsung glaxy tab 10.1

do not buy a gaming laptop other than the alienware m11x if you want to use it in the field! battery life is orrendous and they are big and heavy! if your consider an ipad or laptop i would go with a macbook air over an ipad.

the only people i would recommend a tablet to is desktop users as its cheaper than most laptops(that are good) but not much point in owning a laptop and tablet and you probably cant survive on just a tablet.

My advice buy a new laptop whatever your flavor may be (windows or mac) i like the sony vaio z, macbook pro/air, or the lenovo thinkpad T420 or T520

The iPad is not a laptop and laptops are not tablets. The iPad is principally a content consumption device. So if you need such a device it is the best and best value tablet on the market.

I love my Ipad granted it is over priced, it is what it is however. I also have an Alienware MX11 and love this as well. When travelling, I carry the laptop, my wife carries the Ipad. I have no regrets in buying both as each one has specific uses.
FWIW whats great about the Ipad is that it has not given me any headaches. And I definitely would pay the "Apple Premium" again given our performance experience. In contrast, I recently downloaded Win7 SP1 and this has proven to be a mistake. I will probably have to reformat my Laptop again if a previous windows version restoration does not work. The full reinstallation will probably take several hours which I dread doing.
So for me Yes the table is worth it, if it suits your purpose.

The iPad's not overpriced, it's priced where the market puts it. When you compare it to others with the same features, it's either about the same or less. When the Xoom was released it was substantially more than the iPad2. Motorola has since cut the price such that it's now losing money on it. That can't continue.

I snagged an HP TC4400 tablet laptop off eBay for $130 last week. plopped in an SSD drive and it's pretty darn zippy for my needs. runs Lightroom 3 perfectly fine. I get all of the advantages of a full laptop, but can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet. yes it's heavier than an iPad, but I can do more with it.

and google chrome has angry birds as a free download that can be played offline :-)

Same, but with the TM2 released last year. What I'd really like is if Asus made its eeepad 12" like the transformer, with a keyboard dock, running windows 7. Then I'd have everything I want, right now my hybrid is kind of a halfway point.

All I can say is that if the iPad is overpriced, then how come I see it everywhere? Their latest sales report also suggest anything but.

Can it show raws, or just .jpgs?
