Just got back from a weeks holiday in Cornwall and couldn't believe how many people had their lens hood mounted backwards

Easily 80% of all DSLRs I saw had them on the wrong way around

I was trying to think of how anyone could think that they had it right. Anyone here used to do it before realising their error? What did you think it was for???

Some people need take a quick photo, so they pull out their cameras and take the shot. However, I suspect that the majority of the people do not seem to have any idea what the hood is even used for. I live in San Francisco, and I watch the tourists in my neighborhood everyday walking around with backwards hoods, snapping away outside. Honestly, it drives me crazy!

Possible reasons;

- genuine stupidity
- doesn't fit in the bag with it mounted out front
- large diameter/square filter filter won't allow hood to be mounted right

Ive pulled my camera out with the hood backwards and shot, but VERY rarely. I havent seen that at all though, the people I know have hoods and just dont use them.

I bet you've seen fewer backward hoods than the number of times this topic has been posted here. ;-)a

As was mentioned, some of us find ourselves in a hurry, or sometimes we know the hood isn't needed. I usually flip mine, though, since I don't like using filters for protection.

Had a quick look and couldn't find any other references but I am rubbish at searching :)

I think it is the "genuine ignorance" option really as almost everyone was carrying the camera around their neck which rules out most other options

Are you supposed to use the hood all the time?

I generally do on my 70-200 F4L cause I dont want to smash the long lens on anything, I dont on my 30mm 1.4 though.

I guess you can have the hood reverse mounted on your 30mm then.

I always use the hood... ALWAYS.

Drives me nuts when people are shooting with them backwards.

Pretty much, yeah. More to the point, if you're allowing the hood to take up space in your bag then why not take advantage of the benefits it offers?

Plus, on most lenses you cannot get to the focus ring and/or the zoom ring with the hood reversed.

Well the problem I have is that the hood has expanded or something and it creaks when on my lens.

Try it on a 70-300L -- the zoom ring (and lock) is under the hood if reversed, so not many shooting that lens with a reversed lens hood! I do love that lens though!

Ew I thought it was something you learn to shoot outside with your lens mounted the right way. LOL

I only mount mines backwards when ..I'm just playing with the lens hood. lol

When I shoot with a piece of welding glass, the best way to Jerri rig it to the camera lens is to rubber band it to the lens hood and the only way to do that is to put the lens hood on backwards. That's the only time I use the ens hood backwards. I usually don't use it at all indoors.
